MONSTER'S UNIVERSITY LAND

Savannah College of Art and Design

Winter 2014 - THED 757: Large Concept Project Studio - Prof. G. Head

Design Team: Jacob Berding & Katherine Dixon

The Task

The team was given the task of developing a concept for a land based on an existing IP and designed to exist in an existing space.  Deliverables for this project include 2 attractions, 2 quick service locations, and an event/parade that would occur each day. In addition to these concepts, the team is to produce a white model that will be used as a tool in the master planning of the land.

Location: Disney's Hollywood Studios

IP: Monster's Univerisity

The Story

We began the design process by choosing a well known IP, Monsters University, and developing a story that would drive our design decisions as well as form the theme of the land. Our story is as follows, Mike and Sulley finished the first movie realizing humans weren’t dangerous so they visit our world regularly, since they are well known around the country they decided to make a movie about how they got to where they are. Therefore, they built the Monsters University “set” to reflect when they were students at Monsters University, when scream energy was the main source of power. Using this story we developed our attractions, food venues and shops to emulate a re-purposing of the set as a new Energy testing facility for the actual Monsters University. The facility is conducting tests on the new-found laugh energy and needs willing volunteers to test new can designs, hybrid energy and door technology, that may lead to the discovery of more than anyone could have expected.
